Summer project: Install a Picture Archiving and Communications System; co-register MR and CT data with the National Cancer Institute

“Being able to see the cutting edge of the medical science was what excited me about being a summer intern at the Focused Ultrasound Foundation.”

Project: Install a Picture Archiving and Communications System(PACS) at the Foundation and co-register MR and CT data with the National Cancer Institute.

Accomplishments: PACS is up and running at the Foundation, and the MR/CT data will be reviewed by the NCI and hopefully uploaded at the end of August.

What was the most important learning point of your internship experience? I gained a much deeper understanding of focused ultrasound surgery and its potential uses.

How will your accomplishments impact the field of focused ultrasound? The PACS will largely benefit only the Foundation, but the co-registered MR/CT data can be used by other medical professionals in simulations and treatment planning for focused ultrasound and other image-guided neurological cancer treatments.

How has your internship affected your career plans? It hasn't affected my career plans very much but the experience of working with other professional engineers has provided insight into what my future career might be like.

Do you have any other comments you’d like to share? I'd just like to thank everyone at the Foundation for being so helpful and making my internship the best possible.
