On the eve of its 37th anniversary,  Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre in Mumbai announced in early July  that it was launching the era of non-invasive surgery in India by opening the country’s first MR-guided focused ultrasound facility.

Dr. Shrinivas Desai, the hospital’s Director of Imaging and Interventional Radiology, noted the pioneering nature of the center.

"We are proud to be the first hospital in the world," he said, "to introduce MR-guided focused ultrasound technology with complete available treatment capabilities." He said the hospital had the capability to treat uterine fibroids and bone metastases as well as breast, prostate and other cancers.

"I believe this is just the first step," Desai added, "and with more developments coming our way, I am sure we will usher in a non-surgical era of cancer treatment and other targeted therapies."

Jaslok Hospital will conduct research and clinical trials for breast, liver and bone cancer.

It expects to treat patients from India and neighboring Southeast Asian countries, using InSightec’s ExAblate 2000 system and an MRI system from GE Healthcare.
