On December 11, 2020, the Focused Ultrasound Foundation hosted a workshop on focused ultrasound treatment of pediatric benign brain tumors. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss the ongoing clinical trial at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami, Florida, and develop consensus around the next steps for using focused ultrasound to treat benign pediatric brain tumors.

The meeting convened clinical experts in pediatric neurology, neurosurgery, and oncology as well as representatives from the US Food and Drug Administration and the Focused Ultrasound Foundation. The group of approximately 30 individuals met virtually to hear presentations and engage in open discussion.

Presentation topics included the current state of the art for treating benign pediatric brain tumors with surgery and medical treatment, the ongoing clinical trial using focused ultrasound, the state of the technology, and preclinical research that is seeking to advance and broaden the capabilities of the technology.

The content from the workshop was captured in a white paper. This document includes a summary of the presentations and ensuing discussion on strategies to develop further clinical trials that will give patients access to innovative focused ultrasound treatments.
