The September 2019 issue of the journal Movement Disorders dedicates a Special Series to focused ultrasound research in Parkinson’s disease.

Movement Disorders cover September 2019The Series opens with an editorial entitled, “Focused Ultrasound as an Evolving Therapy for Parkinson’s Disease” from the University of Maryland’s Paul Fishman, MD, PhD, and Nir Lipsman, MD, PhD, from Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto. In all, researchers from 12 institutions across the US, Canada, and Spain contributed to the focused ultrasound papers in the issue.

Other topics include:

  • A review of focused ultrasound as a symptomatic treatment for Parkinson’s disease
  • Research on using focused ultrasound to open the blood-brain barrier in experimental models of the disease
  • Next steps for Parkinson’s disease and gene therapy
Article abstracts are available for free. Full-text versions of articles are available to subscribers, and for others, multiple purchase plans are offered.

Movement Disorders is the official journal of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS). The Journal’s editor-in-chief, Jose Obeso, MD, PhD, is the director of the AC Comprehensive Neuroscience Centre (HM CINAC) in Madrid, Spain. He has conducted his own research on focused ultrasound for Parkinson’s disease, including one of the articles in the issue and a recently completed clinical trial.
