stock disc degenerationDegenerative Disc Disease (DDD) is a major cause of disabling back pain – it is estimated that by the age of 80, over 80 percent of the population has suffered from back pain secondary to DDD. The current treatment options include medications, such as opioid based medications, and invasive surgery. In an effort to reduce opioid prescriptions and prevent the need for invasive surgeries, which can have complications, regenerative medical techniques are gaining traction as potential treatment options. Focused ultrasound is being researched in preclinical studies to enhance such techniques and holds promise to help patients with DDD in the future.

The National Spine Health Foundation published an article by the Foundation’s Associate Chief Medical Officer Lauren Powlovich, MD. In “A Non-Invasive Treatment Option that Holds Potential for Discogenic Back Pain,” Dr. Powlovich reviews how focused ultrasound might play a role in the treatment of patients who suffer from DDD.
