On January 24, we lost one of the giants of therapeutic ultrasound when Professor Floyd Dunn passed away at age 90.
Dunn served as the Director of the Bioacoustics Research Laboratory at Illinois, studying and writing about the characterization of focused ultrasound lesions in the brain and the acoustic properties of different types of tissues.
A member of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering, Dunn was also the past President of the Acoustical Society of America, recipient of the IEEE Edison Medal, and the ASA Silver and Gold Medals. He served on several FDA and NIH committees and was a member of Committee 66 of the National Council on Radiation Protection. In retirement, he continued to contribute to the work of his colleagues and carried an appointment at the University of Arizona-Tucson.
