The Focused Ultrasound Foundation, an entrepreneurial, high-performance, medical research, education and patient advocacy not-for-profit organization in Charlottesville, VA, is seeking a Chief Financial Officer to be a key member of the leadership team. The candidate will have strong relationship management skills, an ability to translate complex problems into clear frameworks, and an entrepreneurial mindset. This position will lead the development and use of best-practices and tools with strong fiscal, human capital, and project management skills that ensure a well-controlled yet flexible organization. As a lean, fast-paced, mission driven organization, it is critical to not only understand the role, but to work collaboratively across the organization.

Responsibilities

Financial

  • Manage the financial operations providing leadership to the finance and accounting functions ensuring compliance with GAAP and applicable laws, as well as Foundation policies.
    • Areas of responsibility include budget, forecasting, financial reporting, all accounting functions, external audit, IRS 990, payroll, and benefits administration.
    • Understand tax guidelines and laws relating to not-for-profits and ensure compliance.
  • Responsible for managing the various forms of funding: unrestricted, restricted, indirect funding including state funding at UVA and Virginia Tech, co-funding, and other funding partnerships. Understand endowment management practices, e.g. ensuring compliance with donor intent, etc.
  • Provide financial reporting and support as needed for the separate charities the Foundation facilitated establishing in Asia and United Kingdom.

Management

  • Perform risk management by analyzing the organization’s liabilities and investments.
    • Areas of responsibility include investment portfolio with the Board-designated investment committee, various insurance policies, and appropriate cash flow.
  • Execute board-delegated signature authority for expenditures and contractual commitments on behalf of the Foundation in a fiscally responsible manner.
    • Ensure contracts are in the best interest of the organization, protecting our nonprofit status and creating minimal risk exposure.
  • Maintain outstanding banking, investor, auditor, and attorney relationships.

Human Resources

  • Provide guidance and appropriately apply practices to the complexities of a matrix organization.
  • Develop best practices and manage the processes for performance evaluations, key performance indicators, compensation reviews including annual raises, bonuses, and promotions and employee recruiting, hiring, and termination.
  • Maintain the organizational chart and roles and responsibilities documentation, providing guidance to executive management.
  • Consider staff needs for training, including mentoring, leadership, and project management skills.
  • Maintain the employee handbook and ensure it is legally compliant.
  • Ensure employee benefits are competitive. Communicate and execute the benefits, including time off leave.
  • Diplomatically and sensitively resolve employee relations issues.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or Finance or JD required.
  • Certified Public Accountant designation or equivalent required.
  • Five or more years of experience in a senior financial management position required.
  • Considerable human resource management experience preferred.
  • Experience in a nonprofit organization.
  • Solid GAAP and financial reporting technical skills.
  • Proficient in database and accounting computer application systems.
