The 2017 Yangtze International Summit of Minimally-Invasive and Noninvasive Medicine (ISMINIM) meeting was held in July in Chongqing, China. Jointly hosted by the Chinese Medical Doctor Association (CMDA), the three-day meeting attracted approximately 300 delegates from Asia, the United States, and Europe. The goal of the meeting was to promote research, education, communication, and international collaboration, while probing into new and promising clinical applications including high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) or FUS.

Presentations at the meeting included clinical abstracts and discussions of FUS in the treatment of prostate cancer, uterine fibroids, abdominal tumors, and other applications. David Cranston, Associate Professor of Surgery, Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, University of Oxford, was sworn in as President of ISMINIM. Said Prof. Cranston, “The goal of minimally invasive and noninvasive therapeutic medicine, and the central focus of ISMINIM, is to minimize harm to patients. The ideology ISMINIM follows is that articulated by Sir William Osler – a founding father of Johns Hopkins Hospital who ended his career as the Regius Professor of Medicine in Oxford – who said, ‘The disease that harms the body requires treatment methods that harm less.’ He also understood the ancient saying ‘Primum non nocere: First do no harm.’ He would have welcomed the new forms of technology that minimize harm to the patient, especially in focused ultrasound therapy.”

ISMINIM was founded in July 2013 at the gala of the First Yangtze International Summit of Minimally-Invasive and Noninvasive Medicine in Chongqing. ISMINIM seeks to promote the concept of heath defined by the World Health Organization: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
