Pain due to bone metastases is approved for treatment in Europe and abroad but is in a clinical trial in the United States and Canada. Pain caused by tumors that spread to the bone is a very common type of pain experienced by cancer patients with breast and prostate cancers. Due to better therapies to treat these cancers, survivors have a high incidence of painful bone metastases. Maintaining quality of life for these patients is a priority. Current treatment options include palliative radiation (which may not relieve the pain), surgery (which may not be an option for some patients weakened by the disease and its treatments), and various pharmaceutical drugs. Focused ultrasound, a non-invasive treatment, which would destroy the pain producing cells in the periosteum that overlies the bone, could provide an effective method of relieving the pain and improving quality of life for late-stage cancer patients. Treatment locations can be found here. Infomation on clinical trials for bone mets can be found here.
