At this time, the Foundation has chosen to concentrate its activities on advancing the clinical application of MR-guided focused ultrasound in order to achieve maximum impact by leveraging its limited resources in terms of financial and human capital.
The Foundation recognizes that ultrasound guidance is equally as important as MR guidance. The two technologies are complementary and will likely be used together in future applications. The Foundation's core initiatives, however, are geared toward advancing MR-guided—rather than ultrasound-guided—focused ultrasound.
And while technical research leading to the development of new MR-guided focused ultrasound technologies, as well as basic research on fundamental biological mechanisms of ultrasound, are both vital to the advancement of the field, the Foundation will only consider funding activities that represent a gating factor in the near-term development and adoption of a reimbursable clinical application.
As the field evolves and additional resources become available, the Foundation may expand its charter to include technical, engineering and discovery level research, yet this will be contingent upon need and the Foundation’s ability to provide unique value.
